Thomas

See It Clearly

IT WAS AFTER that night when Lexie fell out of bed that I began to wonder if Lila might be right.

This life we’re making together, temporary though we’ve both labeled it, is a good life. Not a good life, actually. It’s a great life.

I don’t think either one of us is going to waste any time trying to pretend we aren’t crazy-attracted to each other. Every time I walk by Lila, all I want is to grab her and pick up where we left off that night on the terrace. But then I think about those minutes when we had comforted our child together as partners, as a team, as a real mother and father. This fear comes over me, fear of losing that, of losing Lexie, of losing Lila.

Should this be enough? Keep what we have? Let other people fill our physical needs?

But no sooner does that thought run through my mind than I instantly realize I am not in the least attracted to any other woman. It’s as if Lila has penetrated my heart and my brain to the point that I have no interest in even looking at anyone else.

That’s the part that doesn’t exactly seem fair. And the part I’m elaborating on to Holden one afternoon when we’re having lunch at a favorite diner near Music Row. CeCe is laying down a vocal at our label’s studio. The two of us slipped out to get some food.

Holden leans back in his chair and gives me a long questioning stare. “So what you’re telling me is that you’re thinking now you and Lila should just be friends. No sex?”

“Yeah,” I say evenly, as if I think it’s a perfectly plausible solution.

“Have you forgotten about the part where you really like sex?” Holden asks.

“No,” I say, letting my irritation show. “I haven’t forgotten about that part.”

“So are you considering the Benedictine order—”

“Shuutt up,” I say, rolling my eyes.

Holden laughs. “Well, if you’re committing to no sex, I’m pretty sure you’re going to have to become a monk.”

“Do I really deserve a jerk for a best friend?”

“Just tryin’ to help you see it clearly, man.”

“I don’t want to mess any of it up, Holden.”

“I think the old saying is fish or cut bait. And you don’t think there can be anything in between?”

“Yeah, but not if you’re both lusting after each other.”

“Who says we’re lusting?”

“All a person has to do is walk in a room with you two and the pheromones are thick enough to knock you over.

“You read too much.”

“Have you ever thought maybe you two should not be living together?”

“Of course I’ve thought about it. But I like having them there.”

“If you and Lila share custody of Lexie, you could take turns.”

“Doesn’t that sound perfectly awful?” I ask.

“Well, a lot of the world’s doing it.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s the way I want to live.”

“I get that. But it might come to the point where you don’t actually have a choice. Can I ask you something, Thomas?”

“Yeah,” I say, shrugging.
